hikes & bikes

this past spring ellie and i went hiking about an hour outside nashville. there's nothing quite like hiking in mountains. about 35˚- 40˚ and a lot of steep climbs we ended up having a wonderful day exploring the woods, having good conversations and being charged by bulls (yes. it's true). here are a couple of the photos i took along the way :

excited the weather is getting a little more tolerable so the adventures can resume.

ps. sunday is the bongo bicycle parade - a ride to raise money for ellie's medical bills from the bike accident she was in. you can register and/or donate online or get there a little early to register/donate at the event.

in a perfect world i'd be stumbling out of the guadalajara bus station, finding my driver, and on my way to amacueca. stopping at every light to buy another bag of fresh sugar cane and limes.
but, as fate has it, i'm still in the u.s., wishing i could get my hands on some sugar cane.... and convinced that there is a very good reason as to why this trip didn't work out, for the second time. everything has a reason behind it, even if it's the simplest of things. so i'll just reminisces a little...
hang out on the roof for the hours with this dude.
walk to and stroll through the cemetery to remember our families.
 hang out in sayula.
soak up every bit of sunlight and warmth
and spending the late, late evenings getting lost in the stars and the charm of this unpolluted town.

today's my friday. praise the lord. i have so much to do. i'm just gonna daydream for the next ten hours.

sunday's whatevers (in photos)

every year thanksgiving becomes less and less of what it was when we were children. at some point this has to reverse... but when will that moment be? maybe when we have children? or maybe when we have family?  i miss that kind of celebration - i think it takes people you love, i mean, love love, immensely, as well as the dedication to tradition and celebration.

we didn't do the greatest job of that this year... the dedication part. and this is just turning into a sadly long apology for my absence of photos of the day. yes. i know. i'm terrible, i didn't bring my camera (like i promised). i even choose not to take photos. we're still working on this long recovery back to the camera. man, is it hard. really. it's so difficult. but i'm trying to change my thoughts on it - instead of "someone will have a camera there" or "there's nothing really worth photographing" let's get back to "how about i document everything."
here are some photos for you to indulged in... these are the car rides in LA. i know, silly, but it's something... right?

where my brother's wedding reception was:
huntington beach, with jeff & jacquie:
 catalina island in the distance:

so i just ran down stairs and took a few photos.  its beautiful out. i mean, incredibly cold, but still, beautiful. cold, grey & frosty. mmm. i've been waiting for this weather for months.

pentax 1.0

as photography has been on the back burner, i am slowly easing back in with my lovely, yard-sale-find, $5, old, fully-manual pentax film camera.

please note that slowly easing also means that i've made a lot of rookie mistakes, and forgotten a lot of things i've learned. take that, add it a top the fact that i had never used a pentax before this year.

thus the focus is all off (i think i finally figured the camera out... just wait for the photos from the mountains), there's a lot of experimenting, a lot of messed up shots, but practice makes perfect, right?

here's a few from the 4th of july (my favorite holiday):

skeletons & bones & things

whaaa bam! a new project has begun. i have well over 100 "antique" photos lying around that i've been collecting (damn you thank you ebay). it became quite unhealthy the amount of time i spent perusing the internet... and accidently buying things (... yes. accidently. bidding on items is a whole new world to me).

i once saw a snippet of an artist's work who, jokingly (i believe), drew a cartoon skeleton over an old black & white photo of a woman. so i decided that i'd give it a try & take it a step further. how interesting would it be to look at an entire wall of fairly anatomically correct skeletons & organs as well as monsters drawn over antique photos? i still have some experimenting to do, but here's what i've got so far:
(initial testing of the ink...)
